In the older Tune: This hymn is usually sung to TOPLADY by Thomas Hastings. Written for this text, it was first published in Spiritual Songs for Social Worship, edited by Hastings and Lowell Mason, in 1832.

That name was bestowed in honor of the name of the poet who wrote the text to “Rock of Ages,” Augustus Montague Toplady. It was not until 1830 (52 years after Toplady's death) that the tune for this poem was composed. He named his tune "Toplady" in honor of the writer of the original poem. It is certainly one of the best-known in the English language.
